The beginnings of the Push Present are said to have begun in India and is claimed that they were even around for hundreds of years. A new mother would be showered with gifts in a ritual called the Godh Bharai where the mother gets blessed with the joys of motherhood. The mother to be gets showered with jewelry and gifts and is presented with a feast of fruits and sweets. Whereas gifts at baby showers are normally baby gifts, gifts at the Godh Bharai are for the new mother. There are also games the women play including discussing potential names for the baby to come. This ceremony is typically done at 7-8 months during her pregnancy. It’s also done to bless the unborn baby. In addition to this, she is required to rest and is not allowed to do chores or other typical errands. This is because of the thought that overexertion would cause her milk to dry up. This period lasts typically 40 days. It is normally only attended by women.
